The world of work is undergoing radical change.  Numerous reports have been written over the past couple of years discussing the evolution of the traditional work place including the importance of work life balance and what business can do to ensure it remains competitive.

One of the major changes is the creation of the coworking office space, which is believed to have begun approximately 10 years ago in the United States at the time of the Global Financial Crisis.  Coworking has taken off in most countries around the globe including here in Australia.

Coworking is a membership based workplace, spaces can be short term and flexible, ranging from hot desks, private offices, meeting rooms, event spaces and virtual reality hubs. The coworking concept is popular with freelancers, entrepreneurs, innovators and start-ups.

The major benefits include low cost, opportunity to have a premium street address, networking and flexibility.

We are constantly being told about the importance of both employees and workplaces being able to transform and diversify skills and offerings to adapt to the ever changing economic conditions.  Coworking is a great example of this.  In Perth, while most office buildings have record low occupancy rates, Parmelia House is bucking this trend.

Hawaiian is actively involved in the coworking environment through our partnership with FLUX and Parmelia House in the Perth CBD.

FLUX opened just over 12 months ago occupying 1,385sqm over three floors focussing on supporting entrepreneurship and innovation through spaces, community and learning.  FLUX has been an amazing success and the company has just signed a new lease for another two floors of the building, taking its total commitment to almost 2,800sqm.

The expanded FLUX will now provide a total of 56 offices, more than 150 resident desks and coworking spaces, supporting over 450 people each day.  The new floors will include a virtual reality and an augmented reality lab providing a platform for people designing new technology in what is anticipated to be a rapid growth area.

Hawaiian and FLUX share common values and a desire to connect people and places, so our association is a natural fit. We are proud to be involved with such an innovative business concept helping to grow opportunities here in Perth.

Hawaiian believes office buildings should function as more than a place of work, each building should have its own unique nature to encourage collaboration and provide places for tenants to stop and connect.
