The WA Chrysanthemum Society’s 2018 State Championships is on again at Hawaiian’s Forrestfield this Mother’s Day.

Hundreds of blooms will be on display, including 15 varieties throughout the shopping centre, covering more than 30 trestle tables.

This is the fourth year Hawaiian’s Forrestfield has been involved in the annual event, which has been running since 1967.

Carl Slusarczyk from The Chrysanthemum Society said chrysanthemums are native to China and it is the national flower of Japan.

“Englishman Thomas Pockett, known as the father of chrysanthemums, was largely responsible for introducing the flower to Australia in 1880.

"In fact, Australia led the world in chrysanthemums from 1900 to 1940 because of Thomas Pockett's work.  Some of his varieties are still grown today, Mr Slusarczyk said."

The display will be at the centre from Thursday, 10 May to Saturday, 12 May.  The official opening and awarding of the prizes is on Friday, 11 May at 11am.  The flowers are on sale after 3pm on Saturday.
